Dan Tiens or Chakras?

Updated: Oct 22, 2021

One common point of confusion in the field of energy work concerns the exact definitions of the Dan Tiens and the Chakras. Also often confused and conflated are their corresponding energies, Qi and Kundalini. There is a plethora of misinformation available out there on this topic. Let us take a moment here to try and clear up the proper lines of distinction about these two energy systems and what their general functions are.

Firstly, we'll address the Dan Tiens and Qi. There are three primary Dan Tiens in the body. One is located at the "third eye" point, one at the heart center, and one just below the navel. These are known simply as the upper, middle, and lower Dan Tiens, respectively. In martial and Qigong practice, it is most common that we work with the lower Dan Tien. This is the origin point of the body, found within the gut at the point where life first began. It is here that the Qi (life-force energy) is cultivated and refined for storage and use throughout the body. The Dan Tiens are often called "energy cauldrons" because they are generators and storage points for Qi. When we meditate on the Dan Tiens or perform other forms of energy work, we can stimulate and regulate the production, distribution, and storage of Qi. The three Dan Tiens also correspond to the three minds. It has been shown that this is not merely figurative or an energetic concept. There are quite literally functioning "brains" at each Dan Tien.

The Qi that is created and regulated by the Dan Tiens is our life-force energy. It is the electromagnetic force that sustains all creation and is the primary stuff of the universe. In living beings, it is derived from the food we eat and the air we breath, which is why breathing exercises are so prominent in energy practices such as Qigong and Yoga (Qi is the equivalent of what is called Prana in Yogic circles).

The Chakras, meanwhile, are perhaps best described as energy transducers which function to keep the multiple levels of our bodies "plugged in," so to speak. They are not energy generators or storehouses, like the Dan Tiens. Rather, they are gateways through which energy passes from one level to the next. In this way, the physical body is kept in synch with the etheric, astral, emotional bodies and so on. There are many Chakras, but primarily there are seven which are dealt with. These seven have close connection to psycho-emotional maturity.

Kundalini is wrapped around the spinal column and is the energy associated with the Chakras. It is the feminine energy of creation and manifestation in this world. It is for this reason that Kundalini and the Chakras are connected with psycho-emotional maturity. At birth, we begin life at the Root Chakra, which relates to our sense of security in this physical world. As we grow and experience life situations which cause us to mature, we ideally come to ascend through the Chakras naturally. However, few people ever make it very far as they become trapped in their own illusions and fail to grow properly. This is indeed the great secret of the Kundalini. We must become objectively aware of ourselves and our reality in order to ascend to the top. And once there, we must take the lessons learned and bring them back down again in order to live a more effective and balanced life (a step that is often neglected by misguided practitioners who seek to use Kundalini to escape reality).

So, as we can see, there are some key differences between these two systems and their respective energies. They are indeed related and intertwined, but they are not the same thing. Although the practice of one can and likely will affect the other, the practices of each are not to be confused if one seeks the best results.
