From the emptiness of the One (Wuji) comes the Two. These are the duality resulting from the potential becoming manifest; from the stillness becoming motion. The Two are the duality. These are Yin and Yang, female and male, darkness and light, below and above, cold and hot, and etc. It is from the dynamic interplay of the Two that all things and concepts in creation have their genesis. Again, we see this in all ancient ways and systems, as well as in nature itself.
Yang, the masculine, is at its essence the idea. It is perhaps best illustrated by Shiva, who sits atop the mountain in such depth of meditation that he has no ties or desires in the physical realm. He seeks only the idealistic perfection of the beyond. Yang is the external, hot, excessive.
Yin, the feminine, is the manifest. It is the mother of all that is in the physical realm. It is Shakti, which tempts Shiva back from his meditation and brings him down to help her create. Her desire is to be in the world and to enjoy the pleasures of it. Yin is the sensual. She is internal, cold, deficient.
Concerning their interplay, the sensuality of Yin absorbs and manifests the ideation of Yang, thereby giving birth to creation. They must always be engaged in their perfect dance, just as night and day, in order to maintain all cycles of nature.
In our practice, these forces work as balancing energies of which we must always be aware. Yin and Yang are born the instant we set our intention into motion and exit Wuji. When we move forward, we must be conscious of the backward. When we look up, we must be aware of what is down. Energy pressed in any direction must be balanced by energy moving in the opposite direction. Each part of the body must have an unbroken relationship. Nothing can happen alone. When one part moves, the entire unit must move in harmony. This can be a difficult thing to grasp at first, especially since the modern mind tends to think of everything as being separate and individual. We must practice well and contemplate deeply until we recall what is natural.
