Balance Workout Styles for Better Health

Updated: Oct 22, 2021

In our fast-paced, goal-oriented society, it is all too common for us to become so intent on the prize that we seldom think to stop and slow down. When it comes to our exercise routines, the idea of pushing ourselves past the limit is often taken as the only way to achieve our goals. And while there is certainly much truth to that, we must be wary of neglecting our bodies and burning out.

Our bodies function in much the same manner as any electric-powered machine. If care is taken to supply the right amount and type of power and regular maintenance is given, then we can expect to run smoothly for a long time. However, if we try to push ourselves for too long at too high a level or without maintenance, then just like a machine it won't be long before our parts start to burn out -- often with disastrous consequences for our health and function.

While it is always a good idea to moderate to avoid injury, it becomes even more vital as we grow older. When we reach past age 30, our bodies begin to change. Hormone production begins to decline and the body's cells grow and regenerate more sluggishly. As this occurs, naturally, our energy levels can drop and our ability to recover from injuries and high-impact training routines can suffer. A prime example of this can be seen in professional athletes, many of whom are forced to wind down into retirement between ages 35-40. Not only have their talents then been put to rest not even halfway through their lives, but their life's work of tireless training has effectively been lost.

To counter this natural phenomena, it has been common practice for centuries in traditional Chinese arts to balance aggressive training routines with deep internal relaxation exercises, which can refresh and restore the body's energy, balance hormone production, and help the body recover from any injuries. And, in recent years, this style of balanced exercise has been increasingly studied and validated by modern medical science. More and more we are seeing Western medical doctors approve of and recommend such healing arts and exercises as massage, yoga, tai chi, and qigong to prevent and help treat common problems related to stressful lifestyles and overexertion.
